Hi everyone, my name is Lilly and I have been a “yo-yo” dieter, well, all my life.
I have gained weight, lost weight, gained weight lost weight SO many times I have lost count. I have tried every diet out there whether it was replacement meals, fasting, counting points – you name it I tried it. I even got the gastric band!!!! Guess what? I lost a LOAD of weight and still gained it back. Though some would call me “fluffy” I am far from what I was but I have to say it’s been a long road.
The reason I decided to create this site was to help people like ourselves who are of a certain age 🙂 and are trying to get trim and healthy. I am going to share some of my personal experiences – good and bad – so others can understand and benefit from what I have been through and my knowledge and experience.
Please ask questions and get involved here. I love to talk about being healthy in mid life and later. Diet and fitness has become one of my favorite topics of discussion and it would be great for everyone to know about successes AND failures so we can all learn.
Here’s how I got to where I am…..
I am in my mid-50’s (give or take a year or two) and on the BMI index I am considered “obese” at 5′ 8″ and 185 lbs. (13 stone in the UK). At my highest weight I was 295 lbs and I didn’t realise how big I was until I looked a photo of my office team and said to myself “Wow that is a big person” and then realised it was ME! Today most people don’t think I am obese but I work each day to stay healthy and move forward because I know that at my age I need to be aware of the lasting effects on my joints and metabolism.
The way I look at is it’s all about being healthy, happy and able to continue the lifestyle and activities I love to do for the rest of my life. With all the information on the internet and out there I, personally, believe that it’s all about how you feel within yourself.
I truly have tried every diet out there and, to some extent, succeeded at every single one of them. I start one and it’s exciting and new and then I lose interest. I follow the “diet” for as little as a couple of weeks to as much as a year and then I just don’t want to do it anymore. I feel restricted and denied, I get tired of counting or weighing in as well as the group humiliation of not losing, or worse, GAINING weight. In my mind it’s about how you live your life – your lifestyle.
Living a healthy lifestyle is a choice we all should make. It isn’t easy – absolutely not but, for me, it was my last ditch effort. I had finally realised that DIETS don’t work but eating healthy and exercise does – at any age.
Being over 50 I feel a bit stiff in the morning and it’s easier to skip or rush out and buy a muffin or high sugar/calorie breakfast but making better choices actually gave me my life back. By choosing to live cleaner, healthier lifestyle your mind is sharper, your body feels better, inside and out.
I know this isn’t any easy journey but let’s do it together. Being over 50 means we are getting older but we don’t have to get OLD. Feel free to comment, share and ask questions as I grow this site as I am always updating with new information and ideas I come across that I think need to be shared.
